"A central Windows XP media server is integrated with a wireless network in the coach. Custom HTML pages served to a tablet PC through an access point allow visitors to view vehicle maintenance data, go online, or control an array of devices on the network: thermostats, entertainment, lighting, two expandable slide-out rooms, and more. The media server is also integrated with a satellite-tracking dish system on the roof, providing an uplink for Internet access even while the vehicle is moving. A two-way link is available once the RV is parked." (Source: BusinessWire) Hmm this is going to make WarChalking a little more of a challenge! - Chris D.

"But what will most strongly drive the workplace to "less paper" -- not completely "paperless," Romano quickly added -- are wireless devices. As post offices raise the price of postage to make up for the decline in mail, offices will mainly conduct business using e-mail, conference calls and handheld devices that they will lend to their workers. This business practice, in turn, will drive down the prices for handheld computers.
By 2015, a laptop will cost a mere $300, compared with $1,500 today, Romano said. A tablet PC in 12 years will cost $40, a PDA $20, an electronic book reader $30, a pocket TV $10, and a combination Web-enabled cell phone and e-book reader $70. Even though these gadgets exist today, they cost up to 50 times more, as is the case with the tablet PC, for example. " (Source: Elisa Batista, Wired) Hmm, based on what I've seen so far in technology, the OEMs always find new features to boost the price in order to maintain profit margins so I don't see these prices as real! - ChrisD

"Jenkins, however, saw no other choice. If the team wanted the critical wow factor, it was going to have to go with the tablets. The next challenge for Jenkins' group was to find a way to help customers overcome potential hesitancy. To do it, the group deployed a small team of eight IT people on game day to patrol the boxes and assist customers.
"There were people who were confused," but for most fans, the units were easier to use than they'd expected, Jenkins said. And after a quick tutorial, they were "off and running" surfing the Web and even taking digital pictures of their guests and mailing them, Jenkins said.
"If not for the on-site tech people for game day support, the launch would've taken a little longer," Jenkins said. He added that the Seahawks had hoped half the units would be used that first day. The team was pleased to learn that all 83 were used that day and every week thereafter throughout last season." (Source: Michael R. Zimmerman, EWeek)

"Jack Morton created and will execute Microsoft's Tablet PC demo program, which will demonstrate the versatility and power the Tablet PC provides, at professionally staffed kiosks installed in the lobbies of some of the most prominent office buildings in New York and Chicago. Microsoft's office building initiative builds on the success of the company's earlier Tablet PC airport demo program, also created by Jack Morton. Between December 2002 and June 2003, the airport demo program traveled to six airports throughout the U.S., engaging 125,000 business travelers in a hands-on demonstration of the Tablet PC and exceeding demonstration expectations by 20%. By bringing the Tablet PC demo experience to highly visible office properties, Jack Morton will help Microsoft reach members of a precise demographic in a place where they make decisions. During the ten-week program, the kiosks will travel to six office buildings in New York and 12 office buildings and corporate complexes in Chicago. The campaign locations are coordinated through Equity Office Media Network (EOMN), which handles advertising and promotional events for Equity Office, the nation's largest office building owner and manager. Equity Office is able to offer the unique marketing platform due to the company's single ownership and management across buildings, cities and regions." (Source: PRNewswire)

"SAN FRANCISCO -- The print industry is hobbling but it is far from dead, a Rochester Institute of Technology professor told a group of media publishers at the Seybold conference on Monday.
"In the late 1970s and 1980s, 'paperless office' and 'office automation' were overused buzzwords," said Frank J. Romano, a professor at the RIT School of Print Media and the Seybold conference chairman. "In 1983, a company called Wang Labs had introduced a system that could scan images and store them in memory. They predicted paperless offices. Today, offices are 'Wang-less.'"
That's not to say paper-oriented printers and publishers shouldn't take proactive measures to ensure their survival, which is increasingly coming into question, Romano said." (Source: Elisa Batista, Wired)

Just that there will be hundreds of millions more people, armed with tablet computers, ready and able to compete for it."
"Globalization is happening, for good or ill, bringing with it something we English-speaking first-worlders will just have to deal with: Tomorrow, we'll be a lot less special than we are today. And the language barrier to economic prosperity may soon be broken, thanks in part to tablets, handwriting recognition, and improved machine translation." (Source: David Coursey, AnchorDesk)

"With New Chipsets, New Graphics, New WLAN, etc...
Intel Pentium M with “Dothan” core processor will go into mass production using Intel’s strained silicon 90nm fabrication technology in the fourth quarter of the year. The company will even ship the CPUs to its partners, but will formally launch the parts only in the Q1 2004. The code-named Dothan processor will use the 400MHz Quad Pumped Bus, but will feature 2MB of L2 cache and higher core-clock compared to the original Pentium M “Banias” core. Thanks to the improved micro-architecture, the Dothan will not have to run at too high clock-speed. It will start at 1.80GHz (at $637 price-point) in the Q1, will gain 100MHz or more in the Q2 and additional hundred or two megahertz in the Q3 2004 to reach the 2.0GHz milestone. Specifically for mainstream notebooks Intel will release the Pentium M 1.70A processor with 2MB L2 cache and reduced pricing."
"Finally, in the second half of the year the world will see a new chipset or two with or without Intel’s next-generation integrated graphics core. Additionally, the company will bring its new WLAN PRO/Wireless solution, probably supporting 802.11g standard." (Source: Anton Shilov, XBit Laboratories)

In both the offices of Task and Jim Roach's temporary office space, there is a common artifact: laptop computers labeled "Intelliworxx Voice Tablet."
The user could go to an Internet site and scroll up and down or change pages through voice commands. Intelliworxx was trying to sell the tablets for about $8,000, but found few takers.
Today's replacement for the Intelliworxx tablet costs a fourth as much, about $2,000. The biggest maker is Motion Computing Co. of Austin, Texas." (Source: Michael Pollick, HeraldTribune.com)
