About Cheryl Wester

Cheryl is a high school teacher that recently won a Tablet PC.  This is the beginning of her diary based on using the Acer Tablet PC she won.

Day Fifteen with my Tablet PC  - I Love Office 2003

I finally became brave enough and installed Office 2003 on my Tablet PC. The Acer took forever to install the programs. This is where the slower processor speed really showed its colors. I would have loved to be on my PC with 2.26 GHz during this process. I did the typical installation and it still seemed to take forever. It took close to 45 minutes by the time I was done. I wonder how long it would have taken if I installed all the features? As Im nervous about using Outlook 2003 with my Pocket PC (I sync this with my Tablet), I did not install Outlook at this time. I will install that on another computer to learn how that works.

I installed Word, PowerPoint, Access, Excel, FrontPage, and One Note. The first program I played with was Word. I immediately fill in love with the way it worked! They really improved the performance with the Tablet PC. I was able to write directly on a document without making a text box. I could save it with the handwriting, erase the handwriting, and even email my document to a friend. There are so many different ways this feature can be used. As a teacher, Im thinking of all the editing that could be done. Peer editing would be so easy using this. We wouldnt have to worry about typing skills and could write down comments as we think of them. When I read something, I like to highlight and write on it. It is easier for me to concentrate and study by doing this. Now I can scan documents to study and write on them, as I need to. Quickly I will have my own custom study guides.

I was anxious to see how the other programs worked so I opened up PowerPoint. It is sweet! Again, I can write easily on a slide. I also like the way it showed how a slide looked when I changed the design format. It made it easy to determine what background would work the best. They had a few more backgrounds to play with and of course I liked the one with the crayons! I am currently thinking of PowerPoint Presentations I can make to show off all the new features. Some of the animations were really different. Ill have to be careful or Ill make one that is too busy to be educational or informative!

I have a lot to learn about all the new features of Office 2003. I really want to use FrontPage and One Note. I think One Note will be great for students. Just think how they will be able to take notes in all classes. They could have tabs set up to divide the notes just like in a regular hard notebook. Im eager to explore this program. Since Ive never used either of them there is bound to be a learning curve. I will keep you informed as to how I do. Somebody, please write a Dummies book for me! Will I need to go book hunting-so until next time-happy computing.
